bluebell babies

I adore bluebells.
Those perfect little flowers
signal the beginning of summer
and that is always something to smile about.

But I also adore the nostalgia I get when I see them.
As a little girl I used to visit the bluebell woods near my grandparents' house every year.
My Nan would pack a picnic of chocolate and sweets
and we would stop half way through the woods to enjoy our feast,
sitting on an huge old tree stump that we called a picnic table.
I would pick small bunches to take home for my mum.
They were always the loveliest adventures.

Bluebells have become a firm fixture in my springtime now I am a mummy.
And my mum always comes along too,
because I think all children should get to have a picnic
in the bluebell woods with their Nanny.
Last year my little man was my only baby,
and he looked so teeny.
But what a difference a year makes.

My two bluebell babies definitely enjoyed their adventure.
Although the beautiful boy is adamant that they are "purple-bells"
and I can definitely see his point on that one.
It was lovely to see them sitting in the long grass.
My beautiful babies among the beautiful bluebells.

  1. Oh beautiful! Love how you put them in blue outfits too. Wish I had that kind of foresight!

    1. Haha. So glad you noticed the outfits. I didn't think of it until I dressed her in her blue dressed, he was already dressed in something else so I decided to get him changed. x

  4. These are gorgeous photos Lucy, and I love that you actually could manage to sit the beautiful girl on the ground. I blatently am destined not to have a baby I can sit and make them look pretty in the bluebells because next year LL will be running around too! I love their little blue outfits too. As I was reading this Mads said 'Look Mummy thats DBG' Very cute. x

    1. I'm so glad it was dry enough to put her down, although to be honest I'd probably have plonked them both in the flowers even if it was wet.
And you might still get lucky with LL next year. When we went last year the little guy was just on the cusp of walking so was still happy enough to sit and smile at the camera for a bit. And his birthday is close to hers.
So cute how our babies are such good friends now. Your Instagram feed always causes much excitement in our house. x

    1. Thanks. There's still time, although probably not much time as the bluebell season tends to be quite tiny. x

  9. The photographs are lovely. We've just moved house and there are lots of bluebells around us, but unfortunately they are in private words and are all fenced off. I'm not sure it is setting a good example for the children to climb through the fence just to take some photographs ...

    1. Oh no. That's such a shame. But then I can see why. They are so delicate and getting more rare so they need protecting. We are lucky to have two woods near us that still let you walk through and see them. But it's very different to when I was small and used to run around picking them. x

    2. Maybe next year when we know the area better we will have found a public area. It is funny that my childhood memory of bluebells is so different to yours, it was drummed into me not to pick them.

  10. Oh Lucy they both look so content there in the bluebells - you really do have the most chilled out kids, I love it. Beautiful photos, I'm off to see some near me this morning too- and the suns out - yay!

  11. simply gorgeous, yes they are purple not blue, we have a few sporadic bluebells up here but nothing like this. Its amazing how the best childhood memories were the simple things in life, not the expensive days out. Nice that your mum is carrying on that tradition with your children.

  21. These photos are stunning. They both look so cute exploring their surroundings and the purple-bells (clever boy!).
My memories of bluebells as a child also involve my nanny. For some reason they don't grow in the park we went to anymore. It was gorgeous. The area would be covered with bluebells and daffodils. It really was like a fairytale x
