the very hungry caterpillar {what we're reading}

Right now, the go-to book of choice
is an absolute classic.
A book that every child should read and know.

And I'm ashamed to admit
it's one which only recently joined our collection.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a book I read constantly while teaching
and sadly the constant reading, use and abuse of my copy
meant that I left it at the school when I went on maternity leave.
And it's only lately that I got around to replacing it.

But I'm exceedingly glad that I did.
This book is far and away
my beautiful boy's absolute favourite at present.
So much so that after having it for two weeks
and reading it at least a couple of times a day,
my little man had memorised the story
and can recite it practically word for word
as he turns the pages and uses the pictures for prompts.

With Eric Carle's simple text
and beautiful and iconic images,
it's truly a gem.
The lovely story of a caterpillar
who grows and grows until it's time to become a butterfly
is like real life magic.
This book isn't considered a classic for no reason.

I can't tell you the joy and excitement he gets from this book
and the joy and excitement that I get
from seeing him so in love with a book
and hearing him "read" a proper story.

    1. It's just a classic, isn't it? I can't believe it took me as long as it did to actually buy my kids a copy. We had a board book version with a finger puppet, but it's not the same as the proper version. x

  2. I have been reading my wee man this book since he was in the womb. It is a steady favourite. For a while he was stuck on the page about Saturday! Like the beautiful boy it is one we can both read by heart. It's great for those time I can tell a story but don't have a book on hand.

    1. Yes, we can read it without the book. We do the same with both the Gruffalo books as well. Very useful at times! x

  3. It's one of our favourites too - my sister gave me a copy at my baby shower and I used to read it to the bump that became Kitty while I was waiting for her to arrive!

    1. Ahh, that's a lovely gift for a baby. And such a lovely theme for baby things in general, we had quite a few Hungry Caterpillar bits bought for us because we didn't know what we were having and it's nice and gender neutral. X

  9. We all love this book, it is one of Evie's favourites. We usually read it several times a day :) It is so lovely to see the books that other Mummy's and Daddy's are reading with their children, it gives everyone lots of ideas for books that their little ones may like xx

  10. We have the same book too, I read it to my kids every night before they go to sleep. My older boy already memorized every word from the book and it was a precious moment for me to be proud of.

    1. It's so lovely when children really love a particular book. And especially when they can then sit and 'read' you that book because they know it so well. x
