a labour of love

I don't think anyone can deny that a carefully planned and lovingly handmade gift is the best kind of gift. There is something so special about knowing that somebody spent a lot of time making something especially for you. While I was pregnant with my little Dollop, and then with Splodge, I made patchwork quilts. I wanted my babies to have something special, made by mummy, that marked a special point in time. And I love their quilts so much... because they are full of memories of eagerly anticipating their arrivals, and then of wrapping them up in them for the first time.

And with my little Flump I have been the same. I spent ages picking out fabric, cutting out the squares and then stitching them together, before applying the batting and backing, quilting it all together and then binding the edges. I love how it's turned out, and I hope she will too. And I'm already dreaming about her snuggled up under it.

This time around I've also gone a bit overboard and after learning to crochet in July, little Flump has two mummy-made crochet blankets to keep her cosy through the winter too. And I absolutely love the fact she has a stash of one-of-a-kind blankets made especially for her. I'm obsessed with baby blankets at the best of times, but handmade ones are without a doubt the best kind.

    1. Aww thank you. I've always been the kind of person who liked to making something, so every now and then I get twitchy to try my hand at something new. x

    1. You can't beat something lovingly made by hand I don't think. You should definitely learn, if I've managed to pick it up it can't be that tricky. x

  4. You don't have to convince me of the merits of mama made for babies! I love that each of my three have been wrapped in the very best that my skill as a knitter could make for them and the alphabet blankie that I made as Kitty's cot blanket is still very much adored by Elma. The really great thing is that if she ever looses is I can knit another one - my record is 12 days for a blankie and I was working full time at the time! Your blankies are beautiful, I love the colours and how all three go together so beautifully - now all you need is Flump to wrap in them!

    1. I think that too... easily replaceable, and I'd know how to repair them if anything happened to them. They do coordinate nicely, don't they. I clearly have a thing about bright rainbow-y colours this time around. x

  6. Aah — these are so beautiful Lucy! I've been desperate to learn how to crochet — I was bought two books for my birthday last year but still haven't had the time to get to grips with it. Lovely gifts for your little one xx

    1. Oh it's one of the best things I've learned. I find it so calming. And I definitely find it easier to learn by watching and doing than from a book, so maybe give YouTube a go, or find a local class like I did to get me started. x
