the work of the christmas fairies

Christmas is all about magic.
It's just such a twinkly time of year.
And there has been some impressive magic
sprinkled in our house of late.

Christmas fairies start the magic for us.
After the children have gone to bed on November 30th,
the fairies come and put up the tree.
And advent starts with a lovely surprise for the children,
in the form of a fully decked out tree twinkling away
to greet them when they get up in the morning.

And then for the whole of December
we are a home full of fairy lights and twinkling candles.
We wear Christmas hats and reindeer antlers
and embrace the Christmas spirit.

It always makes me nostalgic
to see all the decorations again each year,
to remember the stories behind certain ones,
and to think back to the times when they were first hung on the tree.

The new additions for 2013
that our little lady loves looking at her reflection in ...

... a beautiful dove that my Granny brought me as a child
and that fits so perfectly on my tree now ...

... the beautiful boy's heart from 2012
which I can still picture him hanging last year ...

... and the beautiful girl's one too
which was hung with a little help from Daddy because she was so small ...

... the glitter snowflake from the little man's first Christmas
and how incredibly excited I was to be buying him his first tree ornament ...

... a beautiful blue handprint ...

... and perfect pink footprints.

We all weave our own stories around Christmas
and I can't wait to think of the stories we'll all be sharing as a family in years to come.
How we'll smile as we see these decorations again each year
and remember the magic of our earliest Christmases as a family.

I thought nothing could be more magical than the Christmases of my childhood,
until I got to experience Christmas with my own children.

  1. Wow your tree is just beautiful - and very very you! We give the girls a bauble each each year too - I try to choose something that relates to their interest that year so they're rather eclectic but they're so much fun to unpack each year with all the memories that.go with them.

    1. Haha, it is very me. My husband doesn't get much of a look in on decor around here, fortunately he's happy to leave it to me. I love that so many families have the tradition of getting a new decoration each year, I loved doing it as a kid and still love doing it with my own now. x

  3. That's a beautiful tree. Ours really does look like a 6yo decorated it (which she did)

    1. Haha. My two are too little to be any help really, which is why the fairies do it. But when they are a bit bigger, we have another slightly smaller tree that is going to be theirs for their own decorations and the things they make. x

  4. Well said. Being a parent means you get to be a child again. What could be better? The best of all is when your tree is covered in little things that their precious hands made for you at school.Beautiful pictures, as always!

    1. I think it's lovely to have personalised decorations, when we got the first one on the little man's first Christmas I joked about having hundreds of babies just so I could have a tree full of them. x

  11. I can't believe we haven't got our tree up yet! I'm even sure where we are going to put it as J will be trying it to pull it down on him but I might try and get it done tomorrow otherwise there won't be much point. I kind of hope it snows really as that would make it feel a lot more like Christmas. Lovely tree! x

  15. What a gorgeous post, I love that Christmas fairies come, what a wonderful and magical idea. I set ours up whilst Addy was away she was overwhelmed when she came home, the 1st thing she said is "theres no star" that is cause I saved it for her, she was overjoyed.
I love that you have decorations with meaning we do too xx
